CHALLENGE OVERVIEW

Work as a team to demonstrate your programming skills by successfully completing VEXcode VR Computer Science activities from Levels 1-5.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Submit two video recordings:

  1. Process Video (1 minute): Capture the beginning of your coding process (identify the challenge and team members) and a brief segment showing your work in progress

  2. Results Video (1 minute): Demonstrate your final code successfully running and completing the challenge


Screen Recording Tools for Students

Here are some reliable screen recording tools your Grade 8 students could use for their VEX Robotics Coding Challenge:


Free Options

  • OBS Studio - Powerful, open-source software for Windows, Mac and Linux

  • Xbox Game Bar - Built into Windows 10/11 (Windows key + G)

  • Screen Recording in QuickTime Player - Built into Mac (no additional installation needed)

  • Loom - Simple web-based recorder with basic editing features

  • Screencastify - Chrome extension with 5-minute free recordings

  • ShareX - Feature-rich open-source tool for Windows

  • Captura - Simple open-source screen recorder for Windows


Built-in Options

  • Windows: Xbox Game Bar - Press Windows key + G to access

  • Mac: QuickTime Player - Open QuickTime and select File > New Screen Recording

  • Chromebook: Screen Capture Tool - Press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows (⏏)

  • iPad/iPhone: Screen Recording - Enable in Control Center


Tips for Students

  • Test their chosen recording tool before starting the actual challenge

  • Keep recordings under 1 minute as specified in the challenge

  • Make sure to capture audio if they plan to explain what they're doing

  • Consider recording at a lower resolution if file size is a concern

  • Remember to identify themselves and the challenge at the beginning of the process video


CHALLENGE PROGRESSION & SCORING

Your team should work through the levels sequentially:

  • Level 1 (5 points): Complete one Level 1 challenge (e.g., Color by Number or Distance Drive)

  • Level 2 (10 points): Complete one Level 2 challenge

  • Level 3 (15 points): Complete one Level 3 challenge

  • Level 4 (20 points): Complete one Level 4 challenge

  • Level 5 (25 points): Complete one Level 5 challenge


Bonus: Each additional challenge completed beyond the requirements earns 5 extra points!
